About Northey Island

Northey island is the site of one of the oldest recoded battles in British history: the tenth century battle of Maldon. This historic battle saw the Anglo Saxon forces defeated by the Viking invaders who used the island as their base of attack. The story of the battle of Maldon is recorded in the poem of the same name, and tells of the heroic actions of the Saxon leader, Byhrtnoth, who is immortalised in a statue situated by the causeway. A plaque dedicated to his actions is also situated on the island. The island is now a far cry from the bloody battle of the past and had become a wildlife haven for birds making this the perfect spot for twitching.
