Congratualtions to the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, as they have received a grant of £464,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) under its Skills for the Future programme for the Heritage Trainees project, it was announced today! 153 years ago, in a remote corner of North Wales, one of the world's earliest narrow gauge steam locomotives arrived at the Ffestiniog Railway in Porthmadog. Now that locomotive, Palmerston, is returning to London for the first time since she was built there in 1864. Palmerston will be rolled into King’s Cross Station at 0100 on Saturday February 18th, and will be on display in the ticket hall until Sunday February 26th.

The Landmark Trust - a charity that rescues historic buildings and makes them available for holidays - launched a new fundraising appeal on Monday 23rd November, hot on the heels of the six-part Channel 4 series Restoring Britain’s Landmarks. The Landmark Trust has already carried out emergency roof works at Coed y Bleiddiau in the Snowdonia National Park to halt the rain damage on the Grade II-listed building, but it now needs to raise £400,000 for the building’s restoration.

Alongside the £1.25 million upgrade to Harbour Station in Porthmadog, the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway is teaming up with Gwynedd Council to improve the footpath that runs alongside the railway on the top of the historic 200 year-old Cob embankment.
Read More >75 years ago this week, A4 Pacific Mallard became the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives, attaining a speed of 126.88 mph. To mark this historic event, one of the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway's locomotives has been fitted with the whistle from Mallard's 1935 sister locomotive, Silver King, which was taken out of service in 1965.
