Join in the fun at Cheddar Caves this Half Term!

Join in with Cheddar Wildlife Week this May half-term

The famous Cheddar Pink, rare butterfly species and peregrine falcons will all be a feature of 'Cheddar Wildlife Week' during the May half-term holidays.

Visitors will be encouraged to enjoy the great outdoors of Cheddar still further by climbing Jacob's Ladder to enjoy the spectacular 360-degrees view from the top of the Gorge.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors to Cheddar Gorge have made their way to the top of Jacob's Ladder since the caves were opened to the public.  But from May half term, current-day visitors will be treated to a greater degree of interpretation, and better signposting showing what to look out for - both on the way up, and at the top.

This is the latest areas of the Cheddar Gorge & Caves attraction to enjoy a recent 'makeover'.  The hi-tech Dreamhunter's experience was installed in Cox's Cave last year, and the redesign of the Museum was unveiled shortly after that.

As well as being able to stroll along the Gorge Top Walk, and discover some of the nature and wildlife that is special to this remarkable stretch of countryside, visitors will also be able to enjoy one of the most breathtaking views in the British Isles - which was recently named the fifth best view in the whole of the UK by a panel of some of the nation's leading travel experts.

The spotlight during May half term falls on Cheddar Wildlife Week, which will run from May 27 to June 4, and will include walks, talks and the appearance of several experts in their field.

A guided walk around the cliff tops on Saturday May 27, for example, will teach visitors how to identify the Cheddar Pink as well as other native herbs and wildflowers.  And while a beginners guide to bird watching on Monday May 29 will tune in to common bird song and identification skills, a bird watching guided walk that same afternoon will put those newly learned skills into practice.

There will also be birds of prey demonstrations, a talk on The Secret Life of Dormice, an introduction to The Mendip Pond Project, a talk of gardening for wildlife and a guided woodland walk.

All events will be free to join, and spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

May will also see the reopening of the Cheddar Gorge shop, following its recent refit.
