Snap, Fly, Ride, Drive, Try: Summer at Brooklands Museum is Full of Fun For All the Family

Snap, Fly, Ride, Drive, Try:
Summer at Brooklands Museum is Full of Fun For All the Family

27th July - 28th August

This summer Brooklands Museum is laying on so much to enjoy, one day won’t be enough. As well as seeing the incredible collections of cars, motorcycles and aircraft from the golden age of racing and flying, families visiting during the holiday will be able to experience thrilling car rides (Mondays to Thursdays), ‘fly’ with the Red Arrows and Concorde, get snapping for the Young Photographer competition or take part in a fascinating workshop on a motoring or aviation theme.

On Mondays to Thursdays from the 27th July to the 27th August the Museum’s popular car rides* will be operating from 11am-1pm and from 2-4pm. Passengers will be taken in a vintage-style car up the challenging Test Hill and along the steep Members’ Banking of the old Race Track, as long as it’s not too wet or slippery. Also running on most weekdays through the holiday period will be scheduled trips* on an iconic London double-decker bus, courtesy of London Bus Museum. Bus rides lasting around 15 minutes will take in a short tour of the surrounding area before returning to the Museum.

Visitors will be also be able to see, hear and feel the effects of speed in Brooklands’ fantastic 4D Theatre. This state-of-the-art facility, using motion seating and a huge 3-D screen, is housed in the original Balloon Hangar building. It allows the rider to experience driving around the original circuit at over 100mph in the famous Napier-Railton racing car, take a lap at the Le Mans race track in 1956 with legendary driver Mike Hawthorn or be a co-pilot with the Red Arrows as they embark on one of their exhilarating aerobatic displays. Each ride costs £5 for adults and £3 for children but riders taking two or more rides on a weekday (excluding Bank Holidays), get discounted ticket prices of £4 and £2 for each ride. (The 4D Theatre is closed for essential maintenance on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th July.)

Brooklands’ Young Photographer Competition returns this summer, with children aged 3 – 16 invited to take pictures around the Museum. The theme of the competition this year is ’Every Picture Tells a Story’ and prizes are on offer for budding photographers in the age categories of 3-7, 8-12 and 13-16. Entries should be sent to [email protected] no later than 31st August.

On every weekday from 27th July to the 28th August there will be a fantastic changing programme of workshops for youngsters inviting them to construct their own peg car, magnetic racer or paper helicopter or launch their own mousetranaut! All materials will be provided and there is no extra cost for these workshops; full details are on the Museum’s website. Outside the Shell Pagoda, budding junior drivers and pilots will be able to try out one of the Museum’s fleet of pedal planes and cars – as long as the weather is dry.

The Sunbeam Café will be open for refreshments all day, Bertie the Brooklands Bear will be making guest appearances and the Museum Shop will be selling games, toys, books and other Brooklands-related memorabilia, including the new Brooklands Top Trumps. So, bring your camera, take a ride or a flight and hold on to your seats as Brooklands Museum offers a day out to remember! *A minimum donation of £1 per passenger is required. Car and bus rides are subject to weather and track conditions.
