About Sulgrave Manor
Sulgrave Manor is a Tudor house built in the 16th Century by Lawrence Washington, the five times great grandfather of George Washington. The Washington family lived at Sulgrave Manor until 1659. The Georgian wing was added in around 1714. For many years the house was lived in by tenants and eventually became neglected and decayed. In 1914 the property and land was purchased by the British American Peace Committee to celebrate 100 years of peace between the United Kingdom and the United States, since the signing of the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. The funds were raised via public subscription. The Manor was refurbished to be ‘...a centre from which sentiments of friendship and goodwill between the two nations will forever radiate’. In 1921 Sulgrave Manor opened to the public and is endowed with the largest UK collections of Washington memorabilia. Sulgrave Manor is an independent historic house owned and held in trust for the peoples of the United Kingdom and the United States.
