About St. Augustine's Abbey
Built for the Anglo-Saxon Kings of Kent in the sixth century, this abbey marked the rebirth of Christianity in southern England following the Augustinian mission commanded by the Pope. It functioned for many years as a Benedictine Monastary until it's dissolution by Henry VIII over 1000 years later and was dissmantled in my places. While lying in ruins now, what remains still shows the amazing architecture and scale of the Abbey and is one of Canterbury's most astounding and historic landmarks.
