Summer Family Fun at Brooklands Museum

Summer Family Fun at Brooklands Museum

This summer Brooklands Museum is laying on so much to enjoy, one day won’t be enough. As well as seeing the incredible collections of cars, motorcycles and aircraft from the golden age of racing and flying, families visiting during the holiday will be able to experience thrilling car rides (Mondays to Thursdays), take part in fascinating workshops and get snapping for our Young Photographers Competition.

Capture the Marvels
The Brooklands Young Photographer Competition returns this summer, inviting children aged 3 – 16 to get their cameras out when they visit the Museum. The theme of the competition this year is ’Brooklands Engineering’ and budding photographers are encouraged to capture the engineering marvels they see at Brooklands.

Entries can be uploaded to the Museum’s Flickr site and must be in by 8pm on Wednesday 3rd September 2014. For details of categories, prizes and other information, seewww.brooklandsmuseum.com or email [email protected]

Entrants using smartphones can upload an image and see all the other entries on the Brooklands Flickr page by scanning the QR code below.

Revving the Engine
On Mondays to Thursdays until the 28th August the Museum’s popular car rides will be operating from 11am-1pm and from 2-4pm. Passengers will be taken in a vintage-style car up the challenging Test Hill and along the steep Members’ Banking of the old Race Track, as long as it’s not too wet or slippery.

Also running on most weekdays through the holiday period will be scheduled trips on an iconic London double-decker bus, courtesy of London Bus Museum. Trips will depart from the bus stop in front of the Clubhouse every half hour, taking in a short tour of the area surrounding Brooklands before returning to the Museum. The 15-minute bus rides run from 11am until 3.30pm with a break over the lunch period.

WWI Remembered
A new children’s trail was launched on the 4th August as part of Brooklands’ WWI Centenary commemorations. The trail invites young people to explore the collections and find out more about what the men and women of Brooklands did during the war and can be picked up in the Shop on entry to the Museum.

Explore Brooklands
A series of workshops on weekdays in August will explore themes connected to Brooklands’ exciting past. Youngsters and parents will be able to participate in a variety of activities ranging from drawing with robots to code breaking and printing with the Sun. Sessions run at 11.00am to 12.30pm and from 1.00pm to 3.30pm, all materials will be supplied. No extra charges or booking apply – just turn up.

Visitors will be also able to take in all the other Museum exhibits and see inside the Barnes Wallis Stratosphere Chamber, which opened earlier this year. The Brooklands Concorde Experience will be open every day so visitors can find out what supersonic travel was really like and learn about Brooklands’ leading role in the Concorde story (Booking on arrival for this is essential to avoid disappointment).

But for a dynamic and thrilling ride, the NEW state-of-the-art 4D Theatre opens its doors on the 18th August at the Museum for the exhilarating Napier-Railton Race Track Experience! The theatre is situated in the Balloon Hangar and provides the closest experience any living person could have of “driving” around the Brooklands Race Track at 100mph. You can now see, hear, feel and even smell what it would have been like to race around the concrete banked circuit in a pre-War racing car*.

The Sunbeam Café will be open for refreshments all day, Bertie the Brooklands Bear will be making guest appearances and the Museum Shop will be selling games, toys, books and Brooklands-related memorabilia.

So, bring your camera, take a ride, take a flight and hold on to your seats as Brooklands Museum offers a day out that is like no other!

Admission prices for Brooklands Museum (including London Bus Museum) are: Adults £11, Seniors & Students £10, Children (5-16 yrs) £6.00, Family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children) £30. The Concorde Experience is £4 for adults and £2 for children.

*Extra charges and restrictions apply. Please see www.brooklandsmuseum.com for details
