As part of Longleat's huge celebration of the wonderful and peculiar world of predators, visitors are being invited to get up-close-and-personal with the most famous prehistoric beast of them all - the powerful Tyrannosaurus rex. The eye-popping Predators: a killer animatronic exhibition, opened at Longleat this Easter, allowing visitors to the Wiltshire estate to come face-to-face with some of the planet's most astonishing predators by utilising animatronic technology. A total of 13 different species are already on display including a deep-sea anglerfish, a polar bear, a giant saltwater crocodile, a Komodo dragon and a spitting cobra.
From May 24, however, they will be joined by T. rex: The Killer Question, which has made it to Wiltshire all the way from the world famous Natural History Museum. Like Predators: a killer animatronic exhibition the exhibition in The Longhouse is scheduled to run through to September 3. A prehistoric installation of epic proportions, it will feature eight animatronic dinosaur models and static scenes to take visitors on an epic journey of discovery - all under one roof, in The Longhouse.
An Edmontosaurus mother with her nest of duck-billed hatchlings, an armoured ankylosaur being preyed upon, and a towering T. rex skeleton cast all make an appearance in this astonishing exhibition, where visitors also get the chance to go "hands-on" with fossil replicas and other artefacts and square up to a life-size T. rex - who, if alive today, would weight around seven tons and whose jaws would crush the sturdiest of bones with ease.
The exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to unravel an ancient mystery, millions of years in the making and tackle a curious conundrum: was the fearsome T. rex perfectly adapted for the hunt; or better suited to scavenging a kill? Visit The Longhouse and decide for yourself if the king of the dinosaurs deserves the formidable title of predator, or whether it was a sneaky scavenger instead.
