Alice brings Manchester’s medieval history to life with a playful story which is both fun and educational. Alice hopes that families will be inspired to visit the landmarks featured in the book – Manchester Cathedral and the little known Hanging Bridge which dates back to 1421.
During the sessions children get an opportunity to listen to the author read from her book, explore this magnificent building and discover where the Troll hides out. Families can opt for a morning or afternoon session or to book both and stay for the whole day! The Cathedral’s youngest guide, Blaise aged 12, will also be leading a Troll Mask Making Trail and Medieval Safari across the Cathedral leaving no stone unturned in his quest to track down the Troll as well as the wild and exotic beasts carved into the fabric of this historic church.
For Alice, a school teacher, this is the culmination of a long-held desire to share Manchester’s lesser known history with a new generation. “Manchester has a fascinating medieval history and it’s a great injustice that most people, even Mancunians, aren’t given the opportunity to learn more about it. As a local myself, it’s important to me because it’s my heritage, and I’m sure other people feel the same way.” Author Alice Sargent.

This brilliant new book casts an original and inspirational spotlight on our 15th century Hanging Bridge, tucked away in the basement of the Cathedral Visitor Centre. Through our Education team we offer a wide range of opportunities to schools and colleges but it is always lovely to welcome local families through our Terrific Tuesday programmes during school holidays as well”
The Troll of Manchester Cathedral will be available to buy for £4.99 at St Denys’ Bookshop, Cathedral Visitor Centre Open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-2pm.
