All-time music legend Sir Van Morrison confirmed for the Eden Sessions

Sir Van Morrison is the latest stellar name to be announced for this summer’s Eden Sessions.

The Belfast-born legend will play against the glorious backdrop of the world-famous Biomes on Saturday, July 1, 2017.

Sir Van is one of the most revered and decorated musicians of recent times.

He was knighted last year, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has won six Grammys, a BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution and the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement.

He released his 36th studio album Keep Me Singing in September last year to critical acclaim and a top-ten berth in both the UK and US album charts.

Rita Broe, Eden’s marketing director, said: “Sir Van Morrison at the Eden Sessions on a summer night is a match made in musical heaven.

“We are so honoured to be welcoming a virtuoso singer-songwriter whose pure original genius has taken him from East Belfast to global superstardom, placing him high in the pantheon of truly great artists over more than half a century.

“This is going to be a magical concert. On a personal note, he is a hero of mine whose albums are like a life soundtrack. We are proud to present Sir Van to his legions of devoted fans.”

Born in 1945 as George Ivan Morrison, Sir Van was inspired by musical greats such as Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Muddy Waters, Mahalia Jackson and Leadbelly.

He was a travelling musician at 13 and singing, playing guitar and sax, in several bands, before forming Them in 1964.

Them established Morrison as a major force in the British R&B scene. His matchless vocal and songwriting talents produced instant classics such as the much-covered Gloria and Here Comes The Night.

After working with Them’s New York producer Bert Berns on the beautiful Top 40 pop hit Brown Eyed Girl, released in 1967, Morrison moved to another realm.

Recorded over three days with legendary jazz musicians, 1968’s Astral Weeks is a still singular album combining street poetry, jazz improvisation, Celtic invocation and Afro Celtic Blues wailing.

Sir Van continued to advance on his status as a game-changing artist through the decades that followed.

The breadth and reach of his collaboration work continued in 2015 with the release of his album Duets: Re-working The Catalogue. Featuring singers as influential and diverse as Bobby Womack, Gregory Porter, Mavis Staples and Michael Bublé, the album re-works songs handpicked from Morrison’s catalogue of over 360 tracks across his career.

Also on the bill at the Eden Sessions in 2017 is Bastille (June 15), Madness (June 16 – SOLD OUT), Royal Blood (June 22), Bryan Adams (July 6 – SOLD OUT) and Foals (July 11).

The Eden Sessions enter their sixteenth year in 2017. Last year saw Lionel Richie, Tom Jones, PJ Harvey, Manic Street Preachers and Jess Glynne carry on the great tradition of bringing top UK and international acts to Eden.
