Free Carers Event at Symphony Hall to Celebrate National Carer's Week

THSH and Birmingham Carers Hub, have teamed up a lot of number local organisations this National Carer’s Week (8th-14th June), to host a free event for carers this Thursday, June 11th and urging local carers to come along.

Starting at 10am and taking place in the Symphony Hall foyers, guests can listen to live music performed by such artists as: Jazzlines Trio, Melody Music and the Halas Homes Sing and Sign Choir. They will also be able to take part in yoga and relaxation sessions, as well as have a head or shoulder massage by a trained massage therapist.

This free event aims to not only provide much needed respite to carers but as well as give them access to help, guidance and support, something which is of particular importance, following new rights under the Care Act and the pressure felt by many carers, who simply don’t know what help is out there.

Simeon Fenton, Chief Executive of Birmingham Carers Hub said, “As well as Birmingham Carers Hub and our partners, there will be many local charities on hand to advise family carers. Come along, enjoy the day’s entertainment, take part in some of the activities and find out how we can help you improve your own wellbeing.”

Visitors on the day will be able to access advice and support from a number of charities, including Midlands Mencap and Autism West Midlands. Speight of the Art will also be on hand, providing a caricaturist and Bhangra Dancers, who will be drawing and performing in the foyer area.

THSH Programme Manager, Chris Proctor commented on the event, saying, “One in four households is home to a carer, with most not even recognising their role or understand that support is out there. Carers work day in and day out, many without knowing their rights, or what help is available. Our event is free, and people can come along, bring the people they care for, relax, listen to music, and also access expert, confidential advice in a safe and friendly environment.

“We understand that many carers may not ordinarily come to Town Hall or Symphony Hall due to the long demanding nature of their work, so we hope that they embrace the opportunity to access live music and specialist advice and support. We’re urging people to come along, enjoy the day and access the support they need, while meeting with like-minded people who understand the pressures of caring.”

The event is taking place in Symphony Hall on Thursday 11 June, and starts at 10am.
