Go behind the scenes for Heritage Open Days at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

This September, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will be opening its doors to reveal the many treasures and stories that can be found behind the scenes of its museums and historic buildings in the popular exclusive FREE tours, as part of 'Heritage Open Days' from Thursday 12th to Sunday 15th September.

Visitors will be able to explore behind the scenes at some of the world-famous attractions, take guided tours into areas not normally accessible to the public and learn all about the fascinating 800 year history of the dockyard.

These popular events are part of the National annual Heritage Open Days, where England's fantastic architecture and culture is celebrated by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission.

Highlights include the chance to go beyond the walls of Portsmouth Naval Base, a rare chance to see the site on board a Vintage bus tour. Visitors can also explore beneath all 3500 tonnes of HMS Victory and view the keel at close range, as well as step on board Monitor M33, discovering the fascinating history contained within the First World War vessel.

Plus, see the historic boats at Boathouse 4 and hear the mysterious tales of Boathouse 6. Find what's contained within the Georgian attics of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and all the artefacts kept behind the scenes.
