Manchester Cathedral Choristers Flip Pancakes

To mark Shrove Tuesday, Manchester Cathedral Choristers took time out of their rehearsals to take part in some pancake fun! The Choristers, aged 8 to 13 and robed up in their cassock, flipped pancakes on the Cathedral grounds. The event was held a few days earlier than usual due to the choristers’ busy schedule.

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which starts the 40 days of fasting and prayer before Good Friday and the Easter weekend. Traditionally, households would eat pancakes as a way of using stocks of milk, butter and eggs, which were forbidden during the abstinence of Lent.

Ash Wednesday will be marked with a Sung Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes at 5:30pm, which will also include the world-famous ‘Miserere’ by Gregorio Allegri and William Byrd’s evocative ‘Mass for Five Voices’.

On Saturday 21st February, at 2:30pm, Manchester Cathedral Choir will be launching their new CD, A Year at Manchester, released on Regent Records Label, in the HMV store Manchester Arndale.

There are also places available for Choristers at Manchester Cathedral, both day and boarding. Auditions are held throughout the year and applications are welcomed from anyone between the ages of 7 and 10. For an informal chat, to find out more or to arrange a preliminary informal audition, please contact Christopher Stokes, Organist and Master of the Choristers: 0161 8332220 ext. 225.
