Manchester volunteers are set to receive a very, very special thank you

In a first for Manchester, The Dean of Manchester is inviting volunteers from partner organisations across the city to a very special service that will celebrate their invaluable contribution to the city. The exciting event is taking place towards the end of volunteers Week (3 to 7 June 2013), which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK and aims to inspire more people to donate time to their communities. Speaking on behalf of the Cathedral, Lauren Bailey-Rhodes describes how volunteers are "the backbone of so many organisations, we want to celebrate their time, commitment and enthusiasm and give thanks for their continued support."

The service will be held in the Cathedral on the Street, 2pm on Wednesday 5 June. The invitation is open to all faiths, or those with no religious beliefs, for an upbeat and fun celebration of volunteering across Manchester. Around 250 people are expected to attend from across the City, both volunteer managers (who will play a part in giving thanks) and volunteers who will celebrate the positive impact volunteering has on their lives.

94,300 volunteers were part of the sector's workforce in the city of Manchester in 2012; representing just under 19 per cent of Manchester's total population. The economic contribution of volunteers in these Manchester organisations is estimated to be £331.8 million per annum.

Looking forward to the upcoming service, Rogers Govender, Dean of Manchester, said: "Volunteers can often be overlooked or taken for granted. Our own cathedral is kept open with the help and support of over 100 volunteers and we really couldn't do it without them. We are very pleased to be leading the way in Manchester through holding this service to recognise and celebrate the important work that volunteers do in Manchester."
