Mercury Theatre welcomes Hollywood and Broadway physical comedy director for vintage version of Dracula

This October, The Mercury Theatre will play host to the West End and Edinburgh sensations The Fitzrovia Radio Hour, in a co-production of Dracula- as you’ve never seen or heard it before!

You are invited to take on the role as the studio audience, whilst Fitzrovia recreate the glamour of a 1930s BBC radio play, live on stage! Remember to bring your garlic with you!

Fitzrovia bring their own unique chauvinist style of a 1930s radio play comedy, as they are backed by a host of bizarrely created sound effects using everyday household objects including staplers, hairdryers and the ever faithful cabbage. Audiences get a glimpse into what it was like to make a radio production in the 1930s, not only with on-air action, but with the off-mic clashes of the performers. Think you know the story of Dracula? Think again!

This play is directed by Cal McCrystal, who has delivered hilarious physical comedy with James Corden in the National Theatre’s hit One Man, Two Guvnors and was also the Physical Comedy Consultant on the Columbia Pictures film The Amazing Spiderman 2 – This production of Dracula promises to be truly unique.

Cal said “Dracula is such a classic story that everybody feels they know it, but it’s also perfect to be subverted into something comic. We are making it as scary as it should be, but very funny at the same time. We’ll give audiences a glimpse into what it was like to make a radio production in the 1930s, whilst taking the liberties we need to get a laugh.”

Adding, “We have an amazing cast for this show; The Fitzrovia Radio Hour are fantastic at what they do and when you team them up with Joanna Wake, a veteran of radio plays and David Benson from One Man, Two Guvnors, you have comedy gold.”

Starring alongside Joanna and David from the Fitzrovia Radio Hour will be Jon Edgley Bond, Tom Mallaburn, Fiona Sheehan and Dan Starkey (who is notably known for his role in the BBC series Doctor Who as Strax).

Dracula will play at the Mercury Theatre from Thursday 30th October until Saturday 15th November. Tickets start at £10. Call 01206 573948 or visit http://www.mercurytheatre.co.uk/event/dracula/ for information, performance times and to book tickets.
