New jellyfish are some of the strangest creatures on the planet!

With not a single brain or heart between them, the dozens of new residents arriving at Birmingham Sea Life Centre later this month are sure to prove a hit with visitors.

They are a collection of jellyfish from around the world, but the absence of hearts or brains is not their only remarkable feature.

'Jellyfish Discovery,' a new attraction at the centre, will consist of 5 different species ranging from Atlantic Sea Nettle jellyfish from the USA, to spotted jellyfish from Australia.

Curator Graham Burrows said: "We have created a magical home for them, featuring ceiling-high tube tanks with multi-coloured spotlights to help show the jellies to best effect.

"But it is what you will learn about these amazing creatures as much as what you can see that will make the encounter so fascinating."

Jellyfish have roamed our oceans for more than 650 million years, longer than dinosaurs and even sharks.

Their strange lifestyle enables them to reproduce both sexually and asexually during different periods of their existence.

Graham added: "They are also amongst the most resilient of sea creatures, able to survive wider ranges of salinity, acidity and temperature than most other species.

"That makes them superbly adapted to plug the gaps when other species decline, which is why there have been huge swarms of jellyfish appearing in recent years.

"Some scientists believe that jellyfish are poised to take over the oceans."
