Powering planes with the new 'Fly-by-Wire' Live Lab challenge in At-Bristol!

At-Bristol science centre has partnered with leading engineering company Rolls-Royce for a brand new Live Lab challenge 'Fly-by-Wire', starting from Tuesday 16 July and running throughout the summer holidays.

The new challenge will be officially 'launched' on Friday 19 July with a special morning event with a host of Rolls-Royce graduates and engineers and a test group of budding engineers in the form of students from Thornford Church Primary School.

Visitors will have a go at powering our craft along a wire racetrack. Using the same principles as those used in some of the world's most complex engines, visitors can choose their propulsion system, check the aerodynamics and test the design along our wire track to see if they have what it takes to master the art of flight!

As part of the graduate agenda for Rolls-Royce, the new Live Lab challenge has been developed with Rolls-Royce graduates and engineers working alongside At-Bristol's Learning team. The experts from Rolls-Royce have trained At-Bristol's Live Science Team who will encourage children and families to be an engineer for the morning by designing, testing, measuring, and improving their engine.

Alice Barber, Live Lab Officer for At-Bristol said: "The new Fly-by-Wire challenge is shaping up to be great fun; it's a unique chance to become an engineer and to try out different methods of flight propulsion. It's been great working with the Rolls-Royce team on the project, and we hope to take the relationship forward to other projects in the future also."

Fly-by-Wire runs from 16 July, with drop-in sessions throughout the day from 10am - 4pm, FREE with standard admission to At-Bristol.
