Summer in the city

Banish summer holiday boredom and join in with fun family activities and events at your local museums!

William Brown Street has lots in store for families; children can design and decorate a guitar to celebrate the International Music Festival (22, 24 August) and join creative workshops every Wednesday of the holiday at the Walker Art Gallery. At World Museum, nature lovers can learn about the birds that nest in the garden and how to look after them (3, 4 August). Visitors can also learn about the art of Indian storytelling in the Telling Tales exhibition and take part in a fun Indian Folk Dance workshop (25 August).

Budding archaeologists should head to Museum of Liverpool where they can have a go at their own dig (14, 24, 26, 28 July). Then get ready to celebrate 150 years since the birth of the inventor of Meccano, Frank Hornby by building Meccano models and taking part in a Meccano team challenge (5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 August).

Find out why boats float and learn about the power of water at the Merseyside Maritime Museum (28 July). Then downstairs in the Maritime, meet and discover more about the sniffer dogs that work to protect the UK's ports and airports at the Seized! Border and Customs Uncovered (25 July & 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 August).

On 17 August visitors to the International Slavery Museum can take part in Slavery Remembrance Day family day where children can enjoy face painting, storytelling, crafts and more.

Enjoy an enchanting summer afternoon inspired by the exhibition The Drawings of Edward Burne-Jones in the Lady Lever's garden; there'll be painting, trails, bubble blowing and more (14, 15 August). Then round off summer at Sudley House's annual Teddy Bear's Picnic on 31 August and enjoy a day of storytelling, crafts and teddy bear adventure hunts!
