The little things that run the world

National Insect Week 2016 launches at ZSL London Zoo

Which amazing animals have ears on their legs? Which tiny team of critters grow their own fungus gardens? Which curious creatures can beat their wings faster than any bat or bird?

Find out all this and more at ZSL London Zoo’s week-long celebrations for National Insect Week, from Monday 20 to Sunday 26 June, celebrating the little things that run the world.

Visitors are invited to go bug-eyed and explore the world under the magnifying glass at the launch of Insects in Depth by scientific artist Alan Shaw in the Zoo’s BUGS house.

Insects in Depth, a spectacular photography exhibition, features three-dimensional close-ups of some of the weird and wonderful members of the insect group.  This unique display will be making its world public debut at ZSL London Zoo this National Insect Week, with visitors kitted out with special 3D glasses to get up close and personal with an array of creepy-crawlies.

A whole host of incredible invertebrates, including hissing cockroaches, praying mantises and well-disguised stick insects will be making guest appearances at the Megabugs LIVE talks happening throughout the week, and a visit to Butterfly Paradise is a must, to see the Zoo’s beautiful butterflies flitting overhead and spot giant atlas moths suspended in the tropical tunnel.

Little creatures can also book to slumber amongst our mini-beasts at two special BedBUGS sleepover events on the 18 & 25 of June. Giving budding explorers a glimpse into the night-time world of nocturnal critters, the first of these activity-filled events will be hosted by CBeebies presenter and bug-enthusiast Jess French.

Special free, pre-booked school sessions are also available throughout the week, giving Key Stage 2 students the chance to become ‘Nature Detectives’ and discover the mini-beasts local to London.

ZSL London Zoo will be buzzing with activities throughout National Insect Week. To get your feelers on tickets visit www.zsl.org today.
