The National Museum of the Royal Navy boost their academic fire-power with the addition of three new Research Fellows

The National Museum of the Royal Navy is delighted to announce the appointment of a Visiting Research Fellow and for the first time, the appointment of two Associate Research Fellows.

Dr David Morgan-Owenwho joins us as a Visiting Research Fellow will be involved in a number of Museum based research projects, as well as exploring the NMRN’s extensive collections for his own research with a specialist interest in the pre-WW1 period 1900- 1918.The National Museum of the Royal Navy is delighted to announce the appointment of a Visiting Research Fellow and for the first time, the appointment of two Associate Research Fellows.

The Associate Research Fellowships are honorary posts which have been created to help the Museum access new research and expertise across the widest possible spectrum of naval and maritime history, as well as further collaboration between the NMRN and academia.

Dr Tim Benbow brings with him expertise of post-1945 naval strategy and policy. Whilst Dr Mike Farquharson-Roberts specialises in the Royal Navy’s officer corps in the early to-mid Twentieth century, as well as the Royal Navy in the First World War.

It is intended that these posts will provide a ready vehicle for future knowledge transfer projects and help scholars promote and demonstrate ‘impact’ in their research.

Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director General of the National Museum of the Royal Navy said, “We see these posts as a vital addition to our research programme and our ability to strengthen our national and international presence in academia.  As a national museum we see collaboration and co-operation between the heritage and academic sectors as increasingly important, especially by ensuring that the stories presented within museums are underpinned by the latest and most rigorous scholarship.”

He added, “I’m extremely pleased to welcome Dr David Morgan-Owen as our Visiting Research Fellow and I know his research will change the way we look at the Royal Navy in the pre-First World War period.”

Dr Duncan Redford, the NMRN’s Senior Research Fellow in Modern Naval History commented, “We are delighted that Tim Benbow and Mike Farquharson-Roberts have agreed to become our first Associate Research Fellows.  We hope that these posts will be the first of many between the NMRN, universities and individual scholars to further new research and ensure it reaches the widest possible audience.”
