Watch out birds - Tatton's scarecrows are back this half term!

From Saturday, February 15 to Sunday, February 23 (closed Monday, 17), the fabulous annual Scarecrow Festival returns to the gardens of Tatton’s historic estate in rural Cheshire East ........the farm are joining in too!

With a reputation for originality and surprise this popular family event continues to be an annual favourite for children looking for simple outdoor fun and creativity during the school holidays.

This year will be no exception as the scarecrow design team (aka the gardeners and Janet Bradshaw from Tatton’s education team) take inspiration from Aesop to create this Spring’s collection. The team have selected Aesop’s fables with a link to Tatton’s gardens and wildlife for a number of their scarecrows. Amongst the fables (and of course their morals) being interpreted are The Jackdaw and the small birds, The Frog and the Well and The Sun and the Wind.

Head Gardener Simon Tetlow said: “Each February the garden team flex their artistic muscles to come up with weird and wonderful scarecrows to entertain our visitors – and to bother our feathered friends! This year, stories will be a major feature of our Scarecrow festival as they will be for our Easter Story Time event in April.”

It is expected that a total of over 70 scarecrows will take up residence in the gardens and children will be able to take part in a fun quiz to find some of these characters throughout the week.

In the gardens on Sunday, 16 February children will also be able to take part in a special day of additional games and activities.  They will be able to help Tatton’s chief scarecrow make and dress more bird-botherers for the gardens and make their own mini scarecrows and animal masks.

At the farm visitors can search for the scarecrow characters of ‘Old Macdonald and his farm’, take part in a quiz and help the farm staff make scarecrows
