The International Slavery Museum in Liverpool is marking its 10th anniversary this year, after first opening its doors on 23 August  2007 – the bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade, and the annual date of Slavery Remembrance Day.

National Museums Liverpool launches Sankofa project

Akala, the BAFTA and MOBO award-winning hip hop artist, writer/poet and historian, has accepted an invitation to deliver the Dorothy Kuya Slavery Remembrance Lecture on 22 August 2016. This is part of National Museums Liverpool’s three day commemorations for the city’s 17th annual Slavery Remembrance Day, which is marked on 23 August.

The Afro Supa Hero exhibition, displaying independent creative director Jon Daniel’s personal collection of Black pop cultural heroes and heroines of the African diaspora, through comics, action figures, memorabilia and games is launching soon.

Opening at the International Slavery Museum, from 13 May - 11 December, is an exhibition celebrating Black role models and icons.
