About Scottish Crannog Centre

Experience the Iron Age at The Scottish Crannog Centre, an award-winning, five-star heritage centre depicting the way of life of Scotland's ancient loch-dwellers.

The focal point of the centre is a unique recreation of a 2,500 year old loch-dwelling, or crannog, built by underwater archaeologists based directly on the results of their underwater excavations in Loch Tay together with many years of research. The Centre has featured in the popular Channel 4 series Time Team and in numerous documentaries. Initially created as an archaeological experiment, the authentic thatched roundhouse is built on stilts out in the shallows near Kenmore, overlooking the remains of 4 of the 18 original crannogs preserved in the loch. Many were built as symbols of power and wealth but today survive as circular islands or submerged stony mounds throughout Scotland and Ireland.

A visit to the Centre includes a self-guided exhibition, a guided crannog tour, and 'hands-on' ancient crafts and technology demonstrations. Themed gift shop and light refreshments available. Special events run regularly featuring artists, musicians, skilled craft workers, and other specialists who, together with our own team of Iron Age Guides, actively bring the past to life.
